Состоит из 16 федеральных земель, каждая из которых имеет свою конституцию, парламент и правительство. Земли подразделяются на районы, города со статусом района и общины. Столица г. Берлин. Официальный язык – немецкий. Занимает площадь 357 021 кв. км, население 82,5 млн. человек. Основано 23 мая 1949 г. (с принятием Основного закона) как сепаратное государство на территории американской, английской и французской зон оккупации после победы союзнических войск во Второй мировой войне. В августе 1949 г. состоялись первые парламентские выборы в бундестаг. Первый федеральный канцлер – Конрад Аденауэр, президент – Теодор Хойс. Высшей политической целью страна объявила воссоединение Германии. С 1955 г. 2 Grundgesetz für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland
n; тж. Grundgesetz, GGОсновной закон Федеративной Республики Германия (Основной закон, ОЗ), конституция ФРГ, принята 23 мая 1949 г. Парламентским советом, избранным ландтагами. Название "Основной закон" призвано было подчеркнуть временный характер конституции западно-германского государства, которая должна была действовать до объединения двух немецких государств. 3 октября 1990 г. действие Основного закона было распространено на вновь образованные федеральные земли на территории бывшей ГДР, что зафиксировано в преамбуле. Основной закон определяет Германию как демократическую федеративную республику, как правовое и социальное государство. Изменение конституции возможно только при одобрении двумя третями голосов бундестага.
